Addition of SCID to Newborn Screening Test

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care issued a memo with notice of change to Regulation 682 under the Laboratory and Specimen Collection Centre Licensing Act and Regulation 552 under the Health Insurance Act.
These changes were made to allow: the addition of Severe Combined Immune Deficiency (SCID) to the Newborn Screening Test; midwives to order SCID; and SCID to be an insured service.

New PPLP module: Abuse prevention

CMLTO's Professional Practice Learning Program (PPLP) was developed as a resource for MLTs to use in their professional development activities or in preparation for a Practice Review. It consists of a series of modules focused on the Standards of Practice.
The latest module is Abuse prevention (PDF), which examines and identifies:
  • forms of abuse
  • zero tolerance position.
  • those at risk for abuse.
  • environments and areas of practice where abuse and/or boundary risks may occur or exist.
  • appropriate professional boundaries.
  • risks associated with crossing boundaries.
  • reporting obligations
  • effective abuse prevention communication skills.

TPH flu alert for health professionals

20 December 2012

Toronto Public Health (TPH) reports that influenza activity has increased substantially over the last few weeks and is expected to reach a peak in Toronto over the next two weeks. As of December 15, 2012, eight institutional outbreaks and 135 lab-confirmed cases have been reported to TPH. Hospitals can expect an increased pressure in emergency departments and emergency admissions over the next three weeks. Read the full alert (PDF) for more information.
