TPH flu alert for health professionals

Toronto Public Health (TPH) reports that influenza activity has increased substantially over the last few weeks and is expected to reach a peak in Toronto over the next two weeks. As of December 15, 2012, eight institutional outbreaks and 135 lab-confirmed cases have been reported to TPH. Hospitals can expect an increased pressure in emergency departments and emergency admissions over the next three weeks. Read the full alert (PDF) for more information.

The CMLTO Patient Relations Committee adapted a presentation, "Clinical Labs and Clinical Nurses: Working Better Together," developed by Clinical Laboratory Services at Kingston General Hospital to facilitate better interprofessional collaboration amongst nursing and laboratory staff to ensure patient care excellence.
The PowerPoint presentation focuses on the six “rights” of specimen collection to reduce errors, wait times, delays and waste and increase patient safety, capacity and organizations efficiencies.

Health Canada's stakeholder consultation regarding the Draft Guidance Document Interpreting the Blood Regulations ended September 24, 2012.
During the consultation on the Canada Gazette, Part I Blood Regulations, stakeholders from hospitals and provincial blood coordinating offices asked questions about how the proposed Blood Regulations would apply to their situations. The document Questions & Answers (PDF) — proposed Blood Regulations and applicability to hospitals reaffirms Health Canada’s commitment to communicate and clarify issues raised concerning the upcoming Blood Regulations.
