CMLTO Registrar & Executive Director appointed to CLEAR committee

The Council on Licensure, Enforcement and Regulation (CLEAR) recently announced the
appointment of CMLTO Registrar & Executive Director Kathy Wilkie as Co-Vice
Chair of its International Relations Committee. CLEAR is the premier
international resource for professional regulation stakeholders and its broad
membership consists of regulatory boards, colleges, organizations, vendors from
around the world. It promotes regulatory excellence through conferences,
educational programs, publications, and research services for those involved in
professional and occupational regulation. Kathy has been involved in CLEAR’s
various activities for several years.

Health Canada seeks consultation regarding Blood Regulations

Notice to Stakeholders — Health Canada released the Draft Guidance Document Interpreting the Blood Regulations for stakeholder consultation from May 28 to September 24, 2012.
The objective of the consultation on the draft Guidance Document is to obtain stakeholder comments on the guidance text explaining the regulatory provisions of the proposed Blood Regulations.

CMLTO's Kathy Wilkie elected FHRCO Officer

Foreign credential recognition

The Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) recently released, Strengthening Canada’s Economy – the Government of Canada 2011 Progress Report on Foreign Credential Recognition.
The report highlights progress made by CIC, Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, Service Canada, and Health Canada to reduce the barriers to foreign credential recognition for internationally trained individuals. CIC and partner departments collaborated with the provinces, territories and key stakeholders to develop tools, processes and initiatives aimed at helping integrate newcomers into the labour market at a level commensurate with their education, skills and experience.
The medical laboratory technology profession was one of the targeted occupations in 2010, and is profiled in the report (PDF).

Office of the Fairness Commissioner commends CMLTO

In January 2012, Ontario’s Office of the Fairness Commissioner (OFC) assessed CMLTO's registration processes. In its report, the OFC found that CMLTO demonstrates many commendable practices. Learn more at the OFC website.

AODA update

The goal of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA) is to make Ontario accessible for people with disabilities by 2025.
The Ministry of Community and Social Services (MCSS) developed standards and rules that businesses and organizations must follow to identify, remove and prevent barriers to accessibility.
As of January 1, 2012, all private and non-profit sector organizations, with one or more employees, must be in compliance with the AODA Customer Service Standards. Employers are responsible for training staff in AODA requirements and CMLTO is working to ensure its own customer service efforts comply.
The primary role for health regulatory Colleges in supporting their members’ compliance is as information conduits. Colleges are not responsible for training nor monitoring of members' AODA compliance.

CMLTO releases Enhanced Professionalism position paper

CMLTO is proud to announce the release of its Enhanced Professionalism Position Paper.
Enhanced professionalism refers to the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours of MLTs that support the evolving needs of the public and the health care system.
Based on discussion with MLTs and building on the themes presented in the CMLTO White Paper: Empowering Enhanced Professionalism, the current position paper:

- presents a case for the collaborative efforts of stakeholders in the profession to assist in this transformation.

You're invited to participate in an online survey investigating recent regulatory changes related to interprofessional collaboration among health regulatory colleges and their members. Researchers at Western University along with the Ontario Health Human Resources Research Network are conducting research into changes to Bill 171 An Act to improve health systems by amending or repealing various enactments and enacting several Acts (2007) and Bill 179 An Act to amend various acts related to regulated health professionals and certain other Acts.
CMLTO Registrar and Executive Director Kathy Wilkie strongly encourages members to participate as the information gathered will evaluate the impact these regulatory changes have had on the MLT profession. Read her letter to members (PDF) here and a letter of information (PDF) from the research team here.
Data obtained from the survey will be encrypted to ensure confidentiality and presented in aggregate form to maintain the confidentiality of survey participants. The research team will share a summary of the results of this study with CMLTO.
