CMLTO response to MLTs as frontline workers

The CMLTO views MLTs as key healthcare professionals providing essential services during the COVID-19 pandemic and at all times.

On Saturday, April 25, 2020, the Ontario government issued a statement regarding pandemic pay for frontline workers. The government did not consult with the regulatory Colleges (nor would it have been appropriate to do so) prior to announcing the increase. The list of eligible workers does not specifically mention MLTs, nor some other key regulated health professionals.

At this time, it appears that the government intends that the pandemic pay be provided to all eligible frontline staff, however, there are few details about how this will be implemented.

As a result of emails and questions from MLTs, the CMLTO suggests that MLTs who work at eligible workplaces ask their employers about their eligibility to receive the pandemic pay as those employers are likely developing processes to deliver it.

As the regulator, the CMLTO is not in a position to advocate on behalf of members—that is the role of the professional associations. The College does thank all medical laboratory professionals for their work to protect the public during these very difficult times.
