The QAP supports medical laboratory technologists’ ability to perform to best practice standards. A QAP is a requirement of all self-regulated health professionals including MLTs. The CMLTO QAP has been operating since the College’s formation in 1991 and over the years the program has implemented numerous improvements. However, a formal evaluation process of the entire QAP has never been conducted. In 2018 and 2019, CMLTO’s Council, Quality Assurance Committee and College staff conducted a formal evaluation to analyze the program’s efficacy. The QAP evaluation approach was developed based on Council’s guiding principles which are:

Enabling professional practice

1. CMLTO collaborates with members to seek input to the Quality Assurance Program and is responsive to members’ feedback.

2. CMLTO encourages members to include quality assurance thinking throughout their professional practice and careers.

3. CMLTO supports and uses proactive approaches with members in pursuit of enhanced professional practice and continuing competence.

Effectiveness

4. Focussed on direct, demonstrated, and measureable continuous improvement of the competence and quality of members’ professional practice.

5. Evidence-based, transparent, fair and objective.

6. Easily understood and will set appropriate expectations of members.

7. Continually evaluated for reliability and validity of program design and implementation.
