Legislation, regulations, bylaws, code of ethics, standards of practice, and practice guidelines collectively establish a framework for the practice of medical laboratory science.

The College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) Standards of Practice promote the continuing competence of medical laboratory technologists (MLTs) by setting out the expectations of practice against which members can identify opportunities for improvement.

These guidelines:

  • Are intended to support, not replace, the exercise of professional judgement by MLTs.
  • Are developed by working groups, which may be comprised of members of the CMLTO or other stakeholders, to ensure they accurately represent best practices and current information.
  • Reflect both public and professional interests.
  • Are maintained by the various CMLTO committees.

NOTE:
On August 14, 2020, the CMLTO Quality Assurance Committee passed a motion to rescind the Guidelines for Medical Laboratory Technologists Practising in Transfusion Science. The guidelines are no longer available.
