Fitness to Practise

Fitness to Practise Committee

The Fitness to Practise (FTP) Committee determines if a member is suffering from a physical or mental disorder that would or could affect his or her practice.

In these cases, the Registrar & CEO usually conducts an inquiry into a medical laboratory technologist’s (MLT's) condition and reports the findings to the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee (ICRC).

The ICRC may then appoint an Inquiry Panel to further investigate. Based on the information gathered, the ICRC may refer the MLT to the FTP Committee that will hold a hearing to determine whether the MLT is incapacitated. The FTP Committee is the hearing or adjudicative committee, so they are not involved until a matter is referred to them by an Inquiry Panel.

The FTP Committee attempts to deal with the member in a non-punitive way, possibly by attaching terms, conditions and limitations to a certificate of registration, or by a temporary suspension while the member seeks treatment. The FTP Committee is non-punitive in that they cannot fine someone or make an order for costs. Their focus is not to punish a member for wrongdoing, but rather to ensure that any member who has a physical or mental condition that affects their practice is monitored or restricted to ensure public protection.
