About Lab Professionals

PDF Print E-mail

In medicine, the majority of decisions about diagnosis and treatment are based on laboratory test results. This is why the people who provide these results and ensure their accuracy – medical laboratory professionals – play such an important role in the healthcare system.

In this section, you will learn about the role and responsibilities of medical laboratory technologists (MLTs). The CMLTO is the regulatory body for approximately 7,000 MLTs who practise in Ontario.

Learn about medical laboratory assistants and technicians and find the answers to some questions about lab professionals and links to more information.

The CMLTO Board of Directors has identified the regulation of medical laboratory assistants and medical laboratory technicians as one of its strategic priorities, based largely on registrant feedback. It believes that increased access to a broader range of regulated health professionals in the clinical laboratory is in the public’s best interest, as is articulated in the CMLTO's Position Paper.

The CMLTO invites medical laboratory technologists, assistants and technicians, and other stakeholders to access information and engage in the process by signing up for updates, offering feedback and requesting the CMLTO meet with you to discuss this initiative.
