Elections for Council

Become involved in your profession's future today

The public expects Ontario’s health regulatory Colleges to ensure quality controls are in place for the many health professionals who provide health care services. The CMLTO Council is committed to meeting the expectations of Ontario’s residents by performing its regulatory duties in an efficient, effective, flexible and fair manner with the utmost integrity. Help fulfill this commitment by bringing your knowledge, skill and ability to Council. Participation in the Council and its Committees is an exciting and fulfilling opportunity. Council involvement provides MLTs with professional growth, new professional relationships and opportunities to contribute to both public protection and the long-term growth of the MLT profession.

Term of office and time commitment

A Council member’s term of office is three years based on a calendar year. A Council member is eligible to stand for election for two additional three-year terms. Council members also serve on Committees to complete important projects that fulfill CMLTO’s strategic goals in support of the MLT profession.

Council members attend an average of 15–20 full-day meetings annually. Council members spend significant time preparing for these meetings, listening to members of the profession and researching best practices. Council work is supported by CMLTO staff.

Council and Committee meetings are held in Toronto at the CMLTO office. On occasion, Committees discuss issues via teleconference and e-mail.

Electoral Districts

CMLTO elections for Council occur on a three-year rotation. The Electoral Map describes the electoral districts. The Three-Year Election Schedule provides a timetable of district elections, deadlines and notifications.

What do I need to do if I want to run for Council?

If you are considering running for Council or nominating a peer, you need to review the election section bylaws, then print and complete the nomination form.

Each candidate must submit a nomination form, a brief biography including reasons for accepting the nomination and a recent photograph. Please refer to the Information Required for CMLTO Council Election Biographies for guidelines on preparing a biography. Candidate biographies will be distributed, with voting ballots, to eligible voting members in the candidate’s district.

If you intend to run for election, please complete the nomination form and send it, with your biography and photograph, to the College by the published deadline.

Becoming a Council Member

Being a member of Council is a rewarding experience. The Council is engaged in developing policy, promoting public awareness, and other activities that provide insight into professional self-governance and the Ontario health care system.

Council members are provided with a thorough orientation regarding the College's role, mandate, and governance framework. Council is provided with regular briefings regarding the government's priorities and requirements under the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (RHPA) and other relevant Acts.

Potential Council members should be aware of the mission and vision of the CMLTO and its regulations, bylaws and policies, which can be found on the College website. The Council governs within a policy governance framework. All members of Council are expected to be effective contributors to Council. An effective Council member is able to work with a group to make decisions, understands and can follow democratic process, is willing to devote time and effort to the work of the College and the Council, has good communication skills, and understands that the goal of the College is to serve and protect the public.

The nomination and election procedures are transparent and well-defined in the bylaws. All nominations must be in writing and received by the Registrar and Executive Director 120 days before the date of the election. If you would like to nominate someone or be nominated, review the criteria and the process carefully. Nominators must reside in the electoral district in which the election is to be held.
